Cancer is a group of diseases where abnormal cells grow without control forming tumors or affecting the blood & can spread to other parts of the body. Common types include lung breast & colorectal cancer & main treatments involve surgery chemotherapy & radiation.

CANCER

The air within the feral, unkept cemetery hangs thick with the scent of damp earth, decaying moss, and the aromatic, rising plumes of burning incense that drift among weathered stone stupas and moss-choked markers.

Within this sanctuary of forgotten grief, two figures emerge from the shadows, their bodies articulated entirely through the profound, earth-bound principles of ankoku-butoh.

Rooted in the foundational technique of koshi—the vital center of gravity residing deep within the hips and lower abdomen—their stances are heavy, contorted, and pulled downward by an invisible, crushing weight.

This is a physicalization of terminal illness, an embodiment of the slow, cellular decay and the absolute devastation of cancer.

Every muscle fiber speaks of a body at war with itself, folding inward to protect a core that is hollowed out by sickness.

The older figure stands with a posture aggressively broken at the koshi, her center of gravity dropped low to the ground as if magnetically pulled toward the soil beneath her feet.

Her white-painted body—ghostly, stark, and starkly contrasting with the dark underbrush—shivers with a faint, imperceptible tremor. Her hair falls in disheveled, ink-black strands across a face marked by the exhaustion of prolonged suffering.

Her eyes are wide, hollow, and fixed on a point beyond the physical realm, capturing the vacant, haunted stare of one who watches life slip away.

Clutched tightly against her is the younger counterpart, a twenty-four-year-old figure with a shaved head painted in the same deathly white, her body manifesting the vulnerability and stripped-down fragility of medical devastation.

She buries her face into the elder's shoulder, her posture equally governed by the sinking collapse of koshi. Their embrace is not one of comfort, but of desperate, suffocating retention—a frantic attempt to hold onto a vanishing form, mirroring the desperate human impulse to anchor a loved one whose body is dissolving from within.

The interaction between the two dancers externalizes the psychological and physical trajectory of cancer through butoh-fu elements:

The Internal Invasion: The older figure’s fingers claw slightly at the rough fabric of her tattered, dark garment, her joints locked in semi-rigidity, symbolizing the malignant spread locking up the limbs, turning fluid movement into agonizing stiffness.

The Weight of the Inevitable:
Every shift in their shared center of gravity demonstrates the heaviness of diagnosis.
They do not lift each other; rather, they drag each other downward, illustrating how a terminal illness pulls an entire family or partnership into the gravity well of the sickroom.

The Dissolution of Identity:
The white body paint, cracking slightly under the mist of the cemetery and the sweat of exertion, represents the erosion of the self.
The shaved head of the younger figure and the disheveled wildness of the older one’s hair strip away social definitions, leaving only raw, exposed mortality.

The Final Breath:
As the incense plumes weave through the humid air around them, their torsos contract in unison—a synchronized, agonizing exhalation that mimics the failure of lungs and the slow, rhythmic surrender to the dark.
Motionless yet intensely active through micro-movements, they remain locked in their cemetery embrace—a living monument to grief, where the dance of darkness becomes the only possible language for an unspeakable loss.
