The vast dome of the Haleakalā Observatory stood open to the thin, cold air at over 10,000 feet, the massive telescope tube angled toward the velvet-black Hawaiian sky like a silent accusation.
The interior was dimly lit by the glow of emergency strips and the faint amber from a single desk lamp, casting long shadows across instrument panels and yellowed star charts.
In this surreal fusion of Renaissance mysticism and modern astronomy, two eternal figures faced each other over an enormous open codex, its pages heavy with alchemical sigils, planetary tables, and cryptic quatrains scrawled in faded ink.
The Morning Star—Lucifer himself, appearing as a weathered in his seventies—leaned casually against the telescope mount. His long, greasy black hair hung in lank strands framing a face etched with sardonic wisdom and faint amusement.
He wore an impeccably tailored all-black suit: ruffled shirt beneath a high-buttoned vest, jacket with subtle satin lapels, slacks crisp despite the altitude, polished shoes reflecting the starlight.
A thick gold pocket-watch chain draped across his vest, glinting as he shifted. In one hand, he cradled a crystal tumbler of dark rum, the liquid catching the light like spilled blood. In the other, a lit cigar smoldered between his fingers, sending thin blue tendrils curling upward. Smoke wreathed his head like a halo in reverse.
Across from him stood Nostradamus, or rather the demon Stolas in the guise of the seer—manifested as a gaunt, intense with similarly long, greasy black hair falling past his shoulders.
He was clad in 16th-century finery: a heavy tech coat of dark wool layered over a ruffled linen shirt, breeches tucked into boots, the ensemble evoking both courtly astrologer and shadowed alchemist. His eyes burned with the feverish intensity of one who had stared too long into scrying bowls and celestial charts.
One long finger pointed emphatically at a particular quatrain on the codex's open page, surrounded by diagrams of interlocking circles, serpents devouring tails, and star maps marked with ominous conjunctions.
The Devil exhaled a slow plume of cigar smoke, watching it drift toward the open dome as if seeking the constellations beyond.
Lucifer Morningstar
(gravelly, world-weary timbre):
"So, Stolas... my feathered prince of stars.
You've dragged me up this godforsaken volcano to gloat over your mortal scribblings?
